PW PTA Meeting June 14, 2011

Call to Order 7:25 pm

PW Budget Review Approval of April & May Budgets; DR motioned to pass and CF 2nd motion. In addition, Interim Budget approved on June 2; Anita motioned to pass and LH 2nd motion.

General Membership Elected Officers 2011-2012 General Membership meeting on June 2 and Shoreline PTA was advised school would start on Sept. 12, 2011.

PW Kinder Playdates -Aug. 3, Aug 26, Aug 30, & Sept 9

Shoreline School Dist. Budget Review & Brown Bag -Budget Review & Summary -Brown Bag info regarding levee for 2012 & how it will financial impact of anticipated funds for schools.

PW PTA Student Packets Packets discussed regarding info

International Committee Meeting of 6/13/11 with the intention of more involvement and bridge school & families to make a better connection, improve events, and create support for all PW families. Pta to liaison w/ Mary Servais & Int. Committee.

Next PTA Meeting Aug 25 @ third place books 7pm

Minutes – Parkwood PTA Board Meeting
April 27, 2011
Meeting was called to order at 6:10

The minutes from the April meeting were reviewed and approved.

Jill provided an update on the plans for the Talent show and fund raiser. The event will be on June 3rd. A flyer will be distributed to all students requesting donations for the various basket themes. The themes will be similar to last year. Also discussed holding an auction with any larger value donations received.

We discussed and approved the allocation of funds from the general fund to pay for childcare during the joint meeting of the International Committee and the PTA On June 13th.

Started a discussion regarding the PTA looking to grant funds for a nature specialist to teach in each classroom next year. Based on budget constraints the discussion was tabled until we know the amount rec’d from the Talent Show event.

An update of the open board positions for next year were review. We are still looking to fill several key positions.

A general membership meeting was scheduled for 6:30 but we did not have enough in attendance for quorum. The general membership meeting will be held along with the Volunteer Tea.

The PTA hosted Cubba Reeese who spoke on the parenting topic of backtalk and strategies for minimizing and coping.

Parkwood PTA Meeting 3/22/11

Members present: Natalie Lecher, Laura Ploudre, Charlene Farkas, Lisa Hayes, Susan Lovelace, Jill Smith, Deborah Rodriguez, and Marion Morhlok

  1. Review of PW February Meeting Notes by Board with a motion to pass by Jill Smith and second by Laura Ploudre.

  2. Updates noted from last meeting: a) Ice Cream Social cancelled; and b) Talent Show date scheduled for 6/3/11.

  3. Budget Review: a) Summary of expenses for the month of Feb (appr. $140); b) estimated budget of $7,000 for remainder of school year and an estimated $5,000 at years end; c) additional fundraising events for spring are Original Works and Talent Show.

  4. Open Board Positions: Secretary, Treasurer, and Ways & Means. Additional positions noted as needed: Co-vp, membership, staff appreciation, family activities, legislation, embrace Shoreline, lost & found, cut n chat, and reflections. NL has an updated list of open & filled positions.

  5. VP Updates *The Works update by CF as respects product drive for needed items and spring prom. *Mariners family event update by LH and game scheduled for May 6 and needs a minimum requirement of 40 participants. *Talent Show 6/3/11 and raffle/auction baskets info will be updated in April newsletter. Also, Central Market is donating $100 gift cert and Costco is donating $50 gift cert. *Math Olympiad update by SL as class started on 3/22 with 11 kids attending and may need to move to a larger room. *Photography Class starts on Mon, 3/28 and 7 kids signed up for that class. *Chess Club is currently ongoing and is scheduled to finish on May 3rd. *Brown Bag update by JS: Parkwood received WA Achievement Award, OSPI website, and only 5.6% of schools in WA state had a high ranking like PW. PW’s Aggregate scores were ranked the highest. Also, the Director of Special Programs discussed the state of Fircrest programs and how it works within the Shoreline School Dist. *Council Meeting attended by NL discussed the Shoreline Museum and the plans for final phase by Council and School Dist.

  6. General Membership *General Membership is scheduled for 6 pm on Wed, April 27th; Parent Speaker scheduled for 7 pm and email reminder requested by NL. *NL to forward budget comparison of 2010-11 to 2011-12; review of goal setting for grants, scholarships, and safety; and PTA support for student programs and classes. Also, the Board discussed a possible Grant position for next year. **Invite the International Committee to a pta meeting, perhaps ay 24th, with the idea of working closer together for betterment of PW.

  7. Golden Acorn Awards: Kalyn Burmeister & Magaret Spencer received the Golden Acorn Awards and are to be presented flowers by PW pta and official invitations to awards dinner event.

Parkwood PTA Meeting 2/15/11

Meeting began 7:00 pm

Budget Review

NL advised teacher grants in the amount of $100 and a deadline of March 31, 2011 for receipt reimbursement. Further discussion on reallocation of funds as follows: $175 for juggling and $750 to the general fund for other uses. Updated status of $1,500 Boeing Grant and was advised that PW did not receive. Finally, Islandwood would be further discussed in upcoming meetings.

Open Board Positions

Open Board positions discussed and noted the following positions filled: box tops, reader board, lost & found, cut & chat, family events & activities, back to school bbq, embrace Shoreline, family & community services, and first aid kits (**note on first aid kits-possibility to increase budget to allow excess purchase of emergency & first aid kits). NW and LH to email shoreline community and solicit for open positions.

Presbyterian Church

Shoreline Presbyterian Church would like to reach out to the PW neighborhood as respects parent education and kid programs. The Associate Pastor would like feedback on ideas and we can forward accordingly to KB.

VP Updates

Photography Class - Susan Lovelace advises there will be a photography class beginning on 3/28/11 and PW will most likely have to have a lottery for class selection. She advises the class is free of cost will be approximately 8 weeks.

Additional upcoming classes include: Math Olympiad, Chess Club, Music Class (currently enrolling 3/7 for a 6 weeks and may have scholarship requests), and Chinese Class is on going. Also, JP inquires possibility of funds available for a science class next fall.

CF updates members on the Holiday food drive and that PW 1st graders would be having a pizza party as the reward. Works volunteers scheduled as follows: 3/3 are CF, JS, and JB and 3/9 are CF, LH, and DR. CF advises items need are socks and undergarments. A donation box will be located in the PW main office. CF will compose a flyer and publish in March newsletter regarding above needed items.

LH has Mariner tickets available for a PW group function. A tentative date of May 6 is planned and a minimum of 40 people are required. A group pricing may be available and event could be a possible fundraiser for pta. PW pta would collect the funds. An advertisement for game will be posted in March newsletter. LH moved and all approve.

Additional items discussed:

One World is scheduled for March 17th with a budget of $400 and Mary Servais will run/organize program. PTA Speaker scheduled for Wed, April 27th with a topic of “Taming back talk”. Event will be posted in PW newsletter. PW received Washington Achievement Award and JS will obtain further info from L. Ploudre and will advise on a future date. PW pta meeting for April 26th has been discussed to be a General Meeting and JS will compose flyer and will be in newsletter.
Ice Cream social is scheduled for May 24th. Region 6 for “Focus Day” is scheduled in Olympia on Feb 23rd and JS will attend. PTA pta binders were created and distributed to current board members with the purpose of creating detailed descriptions of pta positions, resources, and other necessary information that pertains to position. Board Members are requested to compile info and place in binders accordingly. Talent show fundraiser and inquiring with community partners for donations. Board Members were advised that Costco and Sam’s Club are donating to the event. Board Members will inquire with other community partners for additional donations.
