Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year!

August 2016

Dear Parkwood Families:

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year! I hope that you have had a wonderful summer of book-filled family fun

time. Although the current weather definitely doesn’t feel like fall, school is right around the corner and it’s time

for everyone to start thinking about Parkwood again.

In the next few days, you will receive the August/September issue of Panther Tracks, our school newsletter.

Kindergarten families will also receive a separate flyer about kindergarten, and you will all begin receiving

emails in earnest. I am truly excited about what this year will bring and look forward to working with you.

Here is some information to help you prepare for the coming year:

When is the first day of school?

School starts on Wednesday, September 7th.

What are Parkwood’s school hours?

Students must be in line, ready to enter when the classroom door opens at 8:35. Learning begins at 8:40, and

school dismisses at 3:00.

Where should my child line up in the morning? Where will they go at the end of the day?

In the morning, kindergarten students should line up at their classroom’s exterior door. If you are picking up your

kindergartener at the end of the day, this is also where you should meet. If your kindergartener rides the bus, he

or she will be met at the bus in the morning and escorted to their class by Parkwood personnel. After school,

kindergarteners are met by Parkwood Safety Patrol members at their classroom and safely escorted to their

buses.

Students in grades 1 – 6 should line up in the following areas every morning:

Grades 1 and 2: East doors to the main office. These are the doors in the “back” of the building (adjacent

to the gym), closest to the rear parking lot by the portable classrooms.

Grades 3 and 5: South covered area at the end of the intermediate hallway.

Grades 4 and 6: Main entrance/front door (off of Wallingford Ave).

Please note that interior hallways are not open to students or families until 8:35.

What if my child eats breakfast at school?

Our lunchroom opens at 8:20. Breakfast costs $1.75. Staff will dismiss students in time for their prompt arrival to

class. Our breakfasts are delicious!

What should we do if we are late?

First, please do not be late. Morning routines and work are exceptionally important: when students are late,

they disrupt their peers and must rush to incorporate into the class routine. If and when your student must be

late, please have them check in at the main office for a late pass to class.

How do I find out who will be my child’s teacher?

Come to Parkwood’s Back-to-School BBQ on Thursday, September 1st. Classroom lists will be finalized at 4:00

p.m. and staff will be seated at tables to inform families of class placement. If you can’t make it to the BBQ,

feel free to call the Parkwood office at 206-393-4150 on Friday morning.

Tell me more about this BBQ…

Sponsored by the PTA and coordinated by our WatchDOGS, Parkwood’s Back-to-School BBQ is a great

community-building event! Come and find out your child’s class placement at 4:00 then visit classrooms, drop

off supplies, and meet your child’s teacher from 4:00 – 4:30, when the BBQ begins. Every guest receives a free

hot dog and chips. If you are able, please bring a salad or dessert to share (don’t forget your serving utensils)!

All children should be accompanied/supervised by an adult.

How can my child buy breakfast and lunch?

Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 8:15 to 8:35. Students eat lunch with their classmates at designated

times during the day. Full priced breakfast costs $1.75, and full price lunch costs $3.00. Milk is 50¢. An

application for free or reduced priced meals will be sent home on the first day of school (please ask Kendra

Treece, our Family Advocate, for assistance filling out the form). Questions about how lunch accounts work?

Visit our Food and Nutrition Services website at: www.shorelineschools.org/Page/1270

How do I know if my child qualifies for bus service?

Please visit our Transportation department’s website at http://www.shorelineschools.org/Page/1258 for detailed

information on bus routes, special guidelines for kindergarten riders, and Transportation’s contact information.

What if my child walks to school?

Your student’s safety is our highest priority. Crossing guards are located at the following locations before (from

8:10 – 8:40 am) and after school (until 3:15 pm):

O 155th and Wallingford Ave. N.

O 155th and Meridian Ave. N.

I drive my children to school. Where should I drop them off?

If you plan to drop-off or pick up your child, please use the east parking lot turn-around on 155th. The Westside

Parking Lot gets extremely congested for drop-off or pick up. Please allow enough time to get in the lot and

have your child in line by 8:35.

Where can I get school supplies?

You can get school supplies at Fred Meyer, Walgreens, or any office supply store. If you purchase your supplies

at Office Depot, Parkwood will receive a rebate for every dollar you spend when you mention Parkwood and

our school’s ID #70107423. Please notify our office staff, family advocate, or the principal if you need assistance

in purchasing school supplies. We are here to help! Click here for the 2016-2017 supply list:
