December 10, 2008 Board Meeting Minutes

This meeting called to order at 7:00pm.

  1. Secretary Minutes

    • Minutes approved as presented
  2. Extra curricular ideas from the students

    • After school arts (visual arts in particular)
    • Sports (Soccer, tennis and volleyball)
    • Music therapy for kids with special needs
    • Straight fee that can be split between all of the kids who enroll
  3. Family friendly schools walk about

    • The parents who participated suggested signage with consistent look and feel to give better direction to new families on where to find the following:

      • Parent center
      • Main office
      • Gymnasium
      • New visitor sign that is more friendly (and grammatically correct)
      • Visitors must enter on Wallingford Avenue

    • Vendor is Connection Signs. They have agreed to waive installation and allow the custodian to put the signs in the building.

    • $325 for the first 3 signs (parent center, main office, gymnasium)

    • $300 for the visitor signs

    • Suggestion is for the PTA and the school split the cost 50/50 – total cost to the PTA $312.

  4. After school activities

    Currently in progress:

    • Fee based: piano, chess
    • School (staff): Volleyball in Jan, morning reading club, homework club, yearbook, fitness club, caligraphy

    Pursuing:

    • Fee based: spanish, theater, lego engineering, arts (ceramics, painting), needle felting
  5. Reflections

    • write an article for the PTA newsletter who is going on to District

    • reception volunteers needed Jan 21st at the shoreline center. Needs include help during the day for set up and even help with the reception.

    • Honor all entrants at the school assembly scheduled for Thursday 12/18 @ 8:45. Give the kids an art item (markers or colored pencils)

  6. Highland Terrace PTA has suggested sister status with them. It would include the following:

    • Cultural exchange and joint activity

    • B&N fundraiser in May already scheduled and they would be willing to split 50/50

  7. Holiday Food Drive

    • The district is putting together 300+ baskets with a holiday meal. Each school was given a specific item and Parkwood was given olives. We are already at 198 cans of olives!

    • Pizza party for the classroom that collects the most food

    • Rootbeer float party for the class that brings in the most olives

    • $540 donation for The Works. Need to confirm budget. $200 now and if we have additional funds in the second half of the year we can complete the donation.

  8. Staff appreciation - can we get the budget increased to $350? It’s currently set at $250.

  9. General business

    • Need to schedule a general board meeting. Must be announced 30 days prior to the meeting. Combine the general meeting with Heritage Night?

    • Need to approve the budget.

Nov 12, 2008 Board Meeting Minutes

  • Emergency kits- will not go home at the end of the year since the shelf life is for 5 years. Next year PTA will move them to the correct classroom sometime in Sept.

  • -Many questions about accounting with and from the treasurer. He is trying to straighten out the books from last year. Only the treasurer and President have signing privileges at the bank.

  • -Teacher grants will be funded as $100.00 for each teacher. Teachers will be getting a form to fill out to turn in with your receipt. (Natalie will do)
  • Teachers can always request extra money for things but need to be approved from PTA before you purchased.
  • Mary Servais- 1st request- Grant for Bilingual Artists - Mexico celebration in April 30th. Evening event in which all the kids will be invited. Wanting to have PTA to have a grant of $200.00 to help sponsor. This would be to support the food and entertainment.
  • Mary Servais- 2nd request- Grant for P.E. Wall. We have an artist who is spending 30 hrs.with us. Every student will spend time with the artist who will work with the kids on self – portraits. K-1 will do hand prints. Wanting to have PTA to have a grant of $ 200.00 to help sponsor for help with the paint.
  • We will submit these request to an email vote since we don’t have a quorum. Sharleen our wonderful president will send out the vote.
  • Library funds- subject to final budget approval PTA has put 1,500.00 to library for books.
